Kaisa Mäkäräinen (FIN)

Racing: What's new in the Fischer World Cup Team

There is now more news to report from Fischer's Nordic camp. The Nordic number one's biathlon team will be strengthened in future by Kaisa Mäkäräinen of Finland. In cross country skiing Tomas Northug (NOR), the younger brother of overall World Cup winner Petter Northug (NOR), has set his sights high and will continue to place his trust in the yellow racing equipment from Upper Austria.

Kaisa Mäkäräinen's signing was by no means a snap decision. "Last season didn't go very well," sums up the 27-year-old Finn. Something had to happen. The most successful Finnish biathlete decided to join Fischer after extensive tests. In the past Kaisa had to settle for three second and two third places instead of a victory in the World Cup, but the aim is for that to change in future with Fischer skis and boots. "I will keep trying to become one of the best biathletes in the world," explains Fischer's new signing, already looking forward to the new season.

Following in the footsteps of a successful brother
While Mäkäräinen has already made a name for herself in the World Cup, Tomas Northug is on the way to doing so. The 20-year-old already got a taste of the World Cup in the two World Cup sprint races in Oslo and Drammen. He earned his participation in the two events with his two titles at the Junior World Championships in Hinterzarten (GER) in January. With a lunge at the finish that even his brother would have been proud of, Tomas Northug became the Junior Sprint World Champion there and made it quite clear that he is ready to follow in the footsteps of his successful brother. He has also followed his brother in choosing Fischer for his equipment.

"We are delighted to welcome Kaisa Mäkäräinen as another strong woman in our biathlon team," says Gerhard Urain, Nordic Race Director at Fischer, and adds: "With Tomas Northug we have one of the strongest juniors in the world in our team. This is a clear step in the right direction for the future."
