Racing: Streiberger third in Kitz
First speed podium for Fischer
Georg Streitberger was a force to be reckoned with in the World Cup Super-G race in Kitzbühel (AUT). He surprised everyone and clinched a fantastic third place on the legendary Streif run. The thrilling race was decided by mere hundredths of a second and luck was on Streitberger's side. He finished in third place which moved Andrej Jerman (SLO) into fourth, trailing by 0.07. Finishing only just behind Didier Cuche (SUI) and team colleague Michael Walchhofer (AUT), Streitberger earned Fischer their first podium of the speed season. And he did so in one of the most prestigious World Cup races this winter.
Favourable light conditions
Going into the race with bib number 23, Streitberger certainly benefited from the better light conditions. An opportunity that the 28 year-old was able to seize. "It also came as a surprise to me," says Georg Streitberger, who was expecting nothing more than a fairly reasonable result as he swished to a halt at the end of the race. "I wasn't aiming to risk too much, especially at the bottom of the run. Everything just went really well for me!" The Maishofen based skier was already pleased with his downhill training and he has generally been going from strength to strength since Bormio (ITA). No changes, no special training. Simply a little less risk – and Streiberger now has a good chance of making it to the Olympics.
Dry spell comes to an end
With today's third place Streitberger brought an end to what had been quite a dry spell for him. This was his first time back on the podium since his sensational success in Kvitfjell (NOR) in 2008, where he celebrated his first World Cup victory. Streitberger's motto for tomorrow: "Better not to risk too much".
