Racing: Kostelić wins on the Lauberhorn
Unique performance by aesthetic skier
Ivica Kostelić is back with a vengeance! After third place in Adelboden (SUI) the Croatian racer has now made it to the top of the podium. He stole the show at today's World Cup Slalom in Wengen (SUI) with two brilliant runs. The aesthetic skier won the Slalom on the technically very challenging course, beating Andre Myhrer (SWE) by 0.19 and 0.51 seconds ahead of Reinfried Herbst (AUT).
Skiing at its finest
The first leg of the race was extremely close. But it was here that Kostelić paved the way to success. Trailing Herbst by 0.38 seconds at the split time he went on to show what skiing at its finest is on the lower section of the course and took the lead. "Nevertheless," says Fischer Racing Director Siegi Voglreiter, "Ivica still slows down somewhat, he always has something left in reserve!"
Sheer provocation
The race leader paid no attention to the discussions after the first leg, where he was accused of not having skied past the last gate correctly. "That's sheer provocation. I skied the gate quite correctly." He kept his cool and skied a comfortable second run without much further ado. The tenth best time in the second leg was sufficient for the Fischer athlete to maintain his lead and celebrate a fantastic victory – a mere five weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his knee.
Strong team performance but regrettably no podium for Fischer's women
With six racers finishing among the top 21, Fischer's women posted a good team result but lacked the final kick for the podium. Sandrine Aubert (FRA) had the best finish, clinching fifth place. Other placings: 13th Denise Karbon (ITA), 14th Kathrin Hölzl (GER), 16th Maruša Ferk (SLO), 20th Nicole Gius (ITA) und 21st Anja Blieninger (GER).
